SOMI was founded in 1982 with three employees and was located in a very small office in Edina, MN. The company began to grow almost immediately and it was obvious that it was time to set aside the carbon paper and typewriters and move on to a more efficient method of record keeping. We purchased a Tandy 2000 computer from Radio Shack and hired a student to write a program that would meet the company’s needs. A system was established to track benefits, billings and other records as well as settle claims. At the time, no other Third Party Administrator (TPA) was providing services on such a comprehensive scale. As business continued to grow the system was continually enhanced. In 1988, SOMI became one of a few TPA firms nationwide to install a Resource Information Management System (RIMS) for its medical claims business. This move made SOMI a full service TPA. SOMI has now evolved into one of the most comprehensive full service TPAs in Minnesota. The founder of SOMI, Cindy Sheffield is still actively employed at SOMI as the President and Chief Executive Officer. She is the driving force behind the company slogan:

All departments at SOMI support the servicing of our customers during the company’s normal business hours of 8am to 5pm CST. Flexibility in scheduling allows our staff to meets the needs of our clients while providing the opportunity to also meet their own personal and family obligations. In addition to a flexible work schedule we have a casual dress code, which requires "dress up" or "business casual" days only on special occasions when we host outside client visitors.
